Apr. 2nd, 2007 @ 09:10 pm SARVA Week

Seattle-area folks!

I've totally been lax on making announcements about this, but SARVA Week is going on right now! For those of you unfamiliar with the event, SARVA (Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Awareness) Week is an annual event organized by C.O.R.E. (the Committee Organizing Rape Education, of which I am a volunteer). Through events, posters, and other displays, SARVA Week seeks to raise awareness on campus about the issues of sexual assault and relationship (domestic) violence.

Every night of this week through Thursday, there will be an event on campus in the HUB that educates people about sexual violence. (There was one just tonight and it was fabulous.) All events are free and open to the public.

SARVA Week events )

I plan to go to all of these events. Please come and show your support!

Mar. 27th, 2007 @ 01:59 pm Calling all feminist gamers

The ever-industrious [info]tekanji of the Official Shrub.com Blog, working in conjunction with [info]revena, has launched The Iris Network in order to bring together women in the gaming community.

There's an online magazine, a blog directory, and - what I'm most excited about - forums where female and/or feminist gamers can meet and geek out together. Without having to worry about sexist harassment, without having feminist discussions silenced or harassed, and without being excluded from any boys' clubs.

(Oh, and "gamers" really does mean any kind of gamer - electronic, pencil and paper, or LARP. Me, I'm jazzed about the tabletop forums.)

The official site announcment is here. Go! Join!

Seattle-area folks:

The annual UW production of The Vagina Monologues will be running this Thursday, February 8th through Saturday, February 10th. Here are the details:

HUB Auditorium
8:00 p.m.
$7 (UW students can buy tickets in advance for $5)
Proceeds benefit Home Alive

This year's production is being directed by one of my former classmates, who is an awesome woman - even though I've seen the play twice, I can't wait to see what she does with it. I highly recommend going, especially if you've never seen the play before. I'll be going on Thursday night, if anyone wants to meet up!

I checked my email this afternoon to find that I suddenly have a paid account and extra icons. For a year. O_O From [info]dedwardsauve, for no occasion other than random generosity?

I ... I don't even know what to do with this. 100 icons ... *brain goes splodey*

I have to go find icons now! But maybe not until I'm back in Seattle and have a high-speed connection again. XD;;

So, anyway: thanks to [info]dedwardsauve for an out-of-the-blue gift that just made my day. :D A boatload of Awesome Points for you.

My next announcement is for my fellow UW students who are not yet seniors: I got an announcement from the Women Studies mailing list about "Queer 101," a freshman seminar offered through the General Studies department as GEN ST 197. The email I got made it sound pretty worthwhile - an anti-oppression approach to queer experience and history. Also, upon looking at the other freshman seminars available (which are apparently open to all non-seniors), I actually found a few interesting topics, like "Students of Color Persisting in Higher Education."

I hadn't really looked at General Studies before, because I was under the assumption that the courses would be boring. But it looks like there are some quite interesting, specialized courses. It's too bad that I only noticed this now, when I don't have room in my schedule for extra classes. But I thought I'd share, for those of you who still might be able to take them.

The Friends of the Seattle Public Library book sale is this weekend! An airplane hanger full of books for cheap, woo!

Unfortunately, many of the people I know who would like to go are out of town ... but if you're here and interested, the address and time are in the above link. [info]zinjadu and I are going bright and early Saturday morning to get a crack at the goods. You can also go on Sunday when things are even cheaper (but the selection, obviously, not as good).

And yes, I have more books than shelf space already. So what? >_>

Seattle-area folks:

I just got the following email from one of my school mailing lists.

We found two beautiful, fluffy cats abandoned by their former owners. They are sweet, friendly, and house-trained, just looking for a new home to share the love. The first cat is cuddly, loves to sleep at the foot of the bed, eager to find a comfortable resting place beside a person to call her own. The second is more of a quiet charmer, looks exactly like a deep gray lion, also known affectionately as Mr. Fluffy Pantaloons because of his fur-trousers.

Both are playful, indoor/outdoor, probably 2-3 years old. We are smitten but already have multiple cats, so just caretaking until the right people come along. They are really special.

Please email and I'll send photos.

Even though I really (really really really) want to, I really can't. D: D: D: But can anyone else? Maybe pass the word along?

I have the person's name and email address. If you're interested, I'll send them to you.

Seattle-area folks:

There will be a screening of Serenity to benefit Equality Now, a feminist charity supported by Joss Whedon, this Saturday at Magnuson Park (which is right near my place so I can help people with directions). This is one of several screenings nationwide, and it's neat to see this tangible effort being put forth by Joss.

Unfortunately, Saturday is set aside for game and I won't be able to make it, but I figure other people will be interested. Watch Serenity for a good cause!

Details on the event.

Tickets for Wicked (playing at The Paramount Theatre in late September) will go on sale this Friday!

You can buy tickets through Ticketmaster. They range from $30 to $75, and weeknights are a few dollars cheaper. If, like me, you're cheap and are getting the lower-priced seats, I would order them ASAP so that you can get the best ones possible (i.e., front row of the upper balcony).

I just bought tickets for me and [info]ratzeo using a promotional code I got from the Paramount mailing list that gave me access to an online presale - if you want to get in on that, I can send it to you.

Wicked performed live, whee! XD XD XD

Apr. 17th, 2006 @ 10:14 pm Reminder

On April 18, Blog To Raise Awareness About Sexual Violence.

On April 22, Blog Against Heteronormativity.

These topics mean whatever you want them to mean. Break out some statistics. Analyze a news story. Develop a theory. Refute a theory. Or go with the old stand-by of writing an angry rant (which is, of course, my plan, assuming I can manage to write something in between studying for midterms). Just say something, anything, that throws off the tired assumptions that we should keep silent about sexual violence, or that heterosexuality-with-traditional-gender-roles is the way things have to be.

If you're not going to write something, and you don't want to read what I write, go to the links I posted and browse the comments to see what other people have to say - the feminist blogosphere is full to bursting with impassioned and intelligent writers!

Apr. 10th, 2006 @ 09:42 am SARVA Week redux

Just finished helping to set up some exhibits for Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Awareness Week. Go me! :D For people on campus who want to see them, we have the Silent Witness exhibit on the HUB lawn, detailing the stories of twenty-something victims of domestic/relationship violence from Washington in 2004. Inside the HUB, there are a series of posters about healthy relationships. Both exhibits will be on display all week (Silent Witness will be taken down in the evenings).

Of course, there's also the major events I mentioned before. Once again:

Monday, April 10th, 7:00 p.m.
HUB Auditorium
"Consent is Sexy" lecture by Dr. Pepper Schwartz

Tuesday, April 11th, 7:00 p.m.
HUB Auditorium
Born into Brothels screening

Thursday, April 13th, 6:00 p.m.
Red Square to HUB lawn
"Safety Under the Stars" Run/Walk and Rally

There's also an article in The Daily. Whee!
About this Entry
Apr. 3rd, 2006 @ 05:13 pm Productive day

This morning, I: 1) posted flyers advertising events meant to educate my campus about sexual assault, 2) played phone tag with a writer for the Seattle Times to arrange an interview about the anime club, 3) and donated blood for the very first time. All before class. :D

Once I got home, I finally got in touch with the Seattle Times writer, chatted with him a bit about the club, and set up a meeting time. Go me!

As for the bloodloss, it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd been worried about. The main reason I haven't donated before isn't pain - I don't really mind needles - but rather the worry that my body wouldn't handle it so well. (I have low blood pressure, to the point where I occasionally experienced brief blackouts when I was younger. I am just that cool.) But it was fine - I felt a bit lightheaded, but that was it; and I've been guzzling water and juice all day. The only slightly squicky bit was when they were taking samples in small containers; at that point I'd already been tubed up, so the blood flowing in the tube had built up and it sort of sprayed and splattered the inside of the container when it was released. O_o That, and it took so long for me to fill the bag that I ended up being late to class. :P

And finally, the sexual assault education flyers are for SARVA (Sexual Assault & Relationship Violence Awareness) Week, an annual series of events put on by CORE (Committee Organizing Rape Education). As some of you know, I started working with them as a volunteer peer educator last week. So far, I'm still in training and can't really *do* anything yet, but we trainees are still good for grunt work. Thus, the postering.

Here are the events for SARVA, in case you're interested. I plan on going to the Monday and/or Tuesday event.

For the week of April 10 )

March 8 is Blog Against Sexism Day.

From the website:

While those that write about sexism on a regular basis are gladly asked to join in, we encourage those that never or rarely talk about this important topic to join in. There are no guidelines. All that is asked is that you write at least a little something against sexism.

Since I know that you guys hear from me all the time about sexism, and since I'd love to hear from you guys instead. I'm probably going to do it anyway, but still - don't let me monopolize it!

Jun. 22nd, 2005 @ 03:42 pm Advice and an emoticon

My last entry made me think of this ... In high school, I had an aerobics instructor who was once a victim of kidnapping and attempted rape. She made it a point to talk to her (mostly female class) about women's self-defense every semester. I put up a would-be transcript in my old blog a few years ago, and figured it was worth doing it again. This is a condensed version, though it's still fairly hefty.

Long-winded advice follows. )

Also, while looking through my archives to find this stuff, I ran across this emoticon. I think I got it from [info]beanbandit, back in the day.

Kirby says, "up yours." XD
