Title: Give Me Liberty Or ...
Length: 14 tracks + omake, 59 minutes
Notes: Because of my compulsive need to over-explain everything, each track listing is followed by a "why" section that describes relevant parts of Nexus' life. I actually found it pretty useful to write these out, because they allowed me to flesh out and streamline Nexus' character. I think reading the post might help people to better understand things that I haven't expressed through roleplaying, because of lack of either opportunity or skill.

Speaking of over-explaining: I picked the title because of this strip from A Softer World. Or, as I think of it, "If Nexus were a webcomic"!

Also, beware that the choices and order of the songs are based on a (roughly) chronological overview of Nexus' life, rather than an attempt to keep a consistent style or smooth transitions. If it sounds musically incoherent - well, that's because it is.

'Wait. Give me liberty or give YOU death. How about that?' )

Current Mood: mellow
Current Music: "Heavy," Holly Brook

1. My coffee maker arrived on Friday, and I've been wanting to try it out. [info]shadawyn and I have a date to go to Pike Place Market on Saturday, where I will raid Market Spice (an awesome tea/coffee/spice shop). So I couldn't really justify buying anything before that, just for the sake of my own impatience.

However! Today at work, a salesman came by, and, in thanks for my help (which was really quite minimal), gave me a $5 Starbucks gift card. So, I thought, why not? And off I went after work, to buy a bag of coffee beans.

... Except, through cashier error and my own obliviousness, the gift card was not counted toward my purchase, so I ended up paying the full price. :P Ah well. I did get a free drink out of it, because apparently that's what Starbucks does when you buy coffee beans. And, uh, I still have a gift card. XD;;

2. I have been giggling like a giddy child over my new BPAL imps since I picked them up on Saturday. :D And I also made a new order with [info]shadawyn (a.k.a. my enabler). XD

3. [info]ratzeo ran an awesome adventure on Sunday ... which was part one of two, so now I reeeeaaally want to play the other half.

4. [info]kyonkun gave me a link to a Japanese image gallery of hairstyles (so I can see what Asian hair looks like), and I think I've decided what I want for my new haircut: something like these. (Okay, really and truly I would want one of these, but those would definitely take more effort than I'd want to put in.)

5. As I mentioned earlier, on Friday, we had a brief planning meeting for the NWSA conference. It really helped me focus and get back on task, after having floundered about for the past several weeks. I hunted down books to buff up my theoretical knowledge - I'm currently reading this and have ordered this and this.

Which brings me to my goals for the week ... which are basically to finish The Macho Paradox and set a pace to finish all three books by the time we have our next major meeting in mid-May. This goal takes priority over (though hopefully will not exclude) all other ongoing goals.

Can I do it? Honestly, I know there's the risk that I will fall behind here. The daily amount of reading I will need to do will be somewhat like my reading load in college - but now I don't have deadlines and grades acting as enforcers of my discipline. Learning to keep myself on track will be hard. On the other hand, this is a skill I need to learn anyway, now that I'm out of school.
About this Entry
Apr. 16th, 2008 @ 09:19 am Today's happy list

InsaneJournal continues to be down, but should be restored today. In the meantime, here are the things getting me through the mid-week slump.

1. I made a giant batch of soup last night, using this super-easy but tasty recipe. (Just a note - I find it a little too salty, so you may want to add plain water.)

2. I made a semi-impulse buy and ordered a coffee maker and coffee grinder yesterday. I don't drink coffee on a regular basis, but I have been drinking it more lately; and this way I won't have to make a trip upstairs to the coffee stand every time.

3. Work on the Warmakers 4-koma continues. It's slow-going, because I'm so not good at humorous art ... but hey, it's a new skill to develop.

4. My BPAL order arrived! I still have to go pick it up from [info]nekokoban, but ... my BPAL order arrived! :D Also, I'm wearing Bengal today, and while it's not my one of my favorites so far, it's still quite nice.

5. [info]ratzeo is running game on Sunday!

Current Mood: hungry

Trying to counteract a morning in which I spilled a near-full mug of tea in my computer area (but luckily it only splashed wires, not plugs) and found out that our freezer is possibly broken (but [info]kyonkun informed me immediately and we have a plan).

So here are five things that make me happy right now:

1. An epic Next Time Gamers Club adventure on Saturday. We were up past 3 a.m. finishing it, but it was worth it (plus I got to sleep in the next day so I wasn't cranky XD).

2. Sushi last night in celebration of [info]jack_grimm's birthday!

3. Today I have delicious leftover pasta from Costas for lunch. Delicious in an oh-god-my-arteries kind of way, but that's tasty every once in a while.

4. Finally finished a puzzle I've been stuck on for weeks in Picross. (What, it's the little things. :P)

5. [info]ratzeo
About this Entry
Mar. 21st, 2008 @ 01:45 pm 5 happy things for the weekend
Current Mood: 8D

Let's start the weekend off on the right foot by highlighting the good things!

1. I just had a nice, relaxing lunch where I got some quiet time and finished reading the third volume of the new Blue Beetle. I totally dig this series.

2. I got a dose of puppy today! A faculty member brought in her border collie to meet one of my coworkers, and they hung out in the reception area while they talked, so I got some good puppy time in. I love visiting dogs (would never be able to own one, but I love visiting them).

3. [info]ratzeo finished his last final on Wednesday, and last night he and I went on a date to celebrate. I got to see my boy, plus I got to try a delicious new Thai restaurant.

4. [info]ratzeo being done with Winter Quarter also means that he's going to run game again - tomorrow, in fact! Now I need my brain to switch gears from playing a true Neutral Dervish to a Warforged Crusader ...

5. I just got notice of being refunded for the last online shoe purchase I returned (gotta love online shoe shopping with free shipping both ways). This means I have money to fund my next shopping spree - first it was hair jewelry, then shoes, and now apparently it's going to be BPAL. XD

I need a Nexus icon. Hm.

Anyhoo, this is a little mini-fic I started writing a while ago, to start exploring Nexus' concept of gender. Then [info]miss_arel's character brought the subject up at Sunday's game, so it seemed apropos to finish it up and post it.

In case it isn't clear, this scene takes place when Nexus is very young, before it rebelled from its former owner, and is still a soldier.

About this Entry
Oct. 1st, 2007 @ 01:54 pm Good and bad

The good: I finished my fic for [info]ratzeo's game on Thursday night.

The bad: I stayed up until close to 1 a.m. writing the fic, thereby giving me 6 hours of sleep before work on Friday (I generally need 8-8.5 hours a night).

The good: I got to sit in on the adventure [info]ratzeo ran on Friday, even though he split the party into two groups and I was supposed to play on Sunday. Watching Friday's game meant that my character could interact with [info]niwatorimegami's character before he left the game - and, more importantly, I got to see [info]niwatorimegami one last time before she left for Japan.

The bad: I stayed up super-late again, and I couldn't sleep in the next morning because it was the library book sale.

The good: I got to the library book sale early enough to be near the front of the line of people waiting to get in. A lot more people seemed to target the comic book section this year, so I didn't have quite as good of a haul as I'm used to, but I still picked up a few interesting graphic novels. I also snagged a few Octavia Butler novels from the sci-fi section, books by Ronald Takaki and bell hooks from the ethnic studies area, and a collection of essays by contemporary feminists about relationships between straight women and lesbians (I forget the title). I'm trying to educate myself more about homophobia (and transphobia too), and while this book isn't theory-heavy, it's a start. I also figure it's better to start from a source that is explicitly feminist, since I'm particularly interested in the homophobia that infiltrates feminist movements.

The bad: I had to get up at 7:30 to do that. Erg. After the book sale, I ran home to make lunch, then had to go to the grocery store, then had to leave again to meet up with [info]nekokoban and [info]miss_arel for a birthday party.

The good: The party was fun! Also full of nerdery, as we played Apples to Apples and Betrayal at House on the Hill. After that someone broke out The Great Dalmuti, but I was too sleepy and full of boozcohol to participate. I didn't drink enough to get drunk, but it was enough that I promptly fell asleep once I got into bed.

The bad: I got up early again to play in [info]ratzeo's adventure. My poor sleepy self. Sad cries.

The good: The adventure. (Duh.)

The bad: I was supposed to leave in the early afternoon in order to meet my old classmates and talk (feminism) shop. However, I started feeling ill with whatever bug has been traveling around my office in the last week or so. I didn't feel like getting up and going anywhere, so I called in sick and missed the get-together, which was incredibly disappointing. I really don't get to see those women enough.

The good: I did feel well enough to sit at a table and roll dice, so I played the rest of the adventure, albeit fuzzy-headed.

The bad: I'm now sitting at work hit with both sleep-deprivation and desperately fending off sickness. Argh. D:

I was planning to implement a Monday-Wednesday-Friday gym schedule, but I'm too wiped to go, and I'd much rather rest now than get sick later in the week. I want to keep myself healthy and happy, and keep up the good routine I've been having lately.

Three more hours, and I can go home and collapse. I'm going to make this a good month, darnit.

I am totally up past my bedtime. Damn you, [info]ratzeo. XD

I wrote this because I wanted to have a record of the awesomeness that was Saturday's adventure. As such, this is mostly a straightforward recounting of the events of the final battle. I hope it's accessible (and interesting) to people who weren't at the game. I really do think this is one of my favorite adventures that I've ever played, and I hope to convey some of the excitement for others.

That said, the details of the events may not be entirely accurate. Because, well, I forgot them, and my notes are at [info]ratzeo's place. :P Additionally, I got GM approval for retconning a bit at the end so that Nexus could take a token from Kershahk.

Two (and a half) adventures in, and [info]ratzeo has me writing fic for his game. I don't know if that's cool, or sad. :P

My character in this game is Nexus, a construct based off of the Warforged race from the Eberron campaign setting (just with a different origin story). It is three years old, and has spent over two years wandering on its own, since it killed the man who once controlled it. It is a chaotic neutral Crusader whose powers are granted by Tempus, deity of warriors. (It also eschews gender identity, for reasons I'll probably write about later.)

In this story, it has just survived a battle against a cult of evil werewolves who threatened to overrun a human town. Lyson (played by Rommel) is its faithful sidekickhuman companion. Other characters who show up are Anora ([info]zinjadu, Luth (Kindra), Levanter ([info]casaval), and Buron ([info]niwatorimegami). Those may or may not be the correct spellings of their names.
