May. 11th, 2009 @ 10:31 pm De-lurking to say ...

People of color/non-white fans of sci-fi/fantasy/speculative fiction, please stand up!

This roll call, from the deadbrowalking community on LJ, is a response to yet another white SFF writer displaying ignorance of the long-standing presence of fans of color - not yet six months after RaceFail '09. You don't have to write anything lengthy or clever - this post is merely an attempt to get a (however incomplete) count of fans of color, after the nth time a white writer/reader said, "Wow, there's non-white people in SFF?"

And people wonder why we need to specify "'09" after "RaceFail" ... The ignorance is here, again, still.

Current Mood: pleased

[info]ciderpress (LJ) has posted the first Asian Women Carnival!

I haven't had a big chunk of time in which I could sit down and read through everything, so instead I've been reading a post here or there, spending a few minutes at a time. And that's been better, in a way, because then I get to savor each individual post instead of trying to digest all this emotion and wisdom and passion at once. I am so, so loving it.
About this Entry
Apr. 8th, 2009 @ 07:55 pm Secret Identities release!
Current Mood: excited

I'm excited to announce that there's just one week left until the release of Secret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology!

For those who still haven't heard about this book, Secret Identities is a graphic novel collection of new superhero stories by and about Asian Americans. If you want to find out more, there's plenty of material to browse in the PDF preview, or the video trailers.

I highly encourage you to pick up this book, if you're someone who loves comic books and is impatient with how slow the mainstream publishers have been to leave behind the straight-white-male majority in its characters. (In other words ... like, all of my friends? :D) Please spare a few bucks to support it - it's less than $15 at Amazon! I think this project deserves major success, and I'd love to send the message to the comics industry that Asian American superheroes DO have an audience - and deserve a place, front and center - in comic books.

(Those of you who know [info]ratzeo, he is happy to have you buy the book through him and take advantage of his sweet discount at the Comics Dungeon. Heck, even if you don't know him, he'd probably do it anyway as long as you're local.)
About this Entry
Apr. 2nd, 2009 @ 06:24 pm 5 things make an anti-oppression post

Some personal background explaining the reasons behind this post )

1. For those who are still asking, "What is RaceFail '09?" the briefest answer I can manage is: what started as another instance of the discussion about misrepresentation/lack of representation of people of color in science fiction and fantasy has resulted in a particularly public and particularly ugly backlash from (often white) writers and readers.

For a timeline of specific events, please start with this summary by Avalon's Willow. Further events occurred later, as described here by [info]rydra_wong, who has also painstakingly collected all the RaceFail-related links she could find, under this tag

If you're ready for further detail, please see my LiveJournal memories for (what I consider) some of the important posts.

And finally, please refer to this guide to the positive, productive actions taken by POC and allies in the face of RaceFail. Not because of. In the face of.

Read as much as you can. Learn as much as you can. If you take nothing else away from this, remember these two things: This is not "just another wankfest," because it's about race, racism, and representation - not individual personality clashes and this or that book. Also, this is not the first or only such conversation, even if it's the first time you've heard of one like this.

2. One of the best responses to RaceFail has, by far, been the creation of Verb Noire, an e-publishing company dedicated to written works by and about people of color and/or queer people. Please support them by donating.

3.I've posted this before, but remember: if you are an Asian woman or an ally, please contribute to the first Asian Women Blog Carnival. The deadline is tomorrow.

4. This is not a new study (it was published in 2007), but it's highly relevant: Subtle Discrimination is More Taxing On The Brain. Instances of ambiguous racism were more detrimental to black test subjects than obvious cases.

"Interestingly, white volunteers were more impaired by overt racism than by the more ambiguous discrimination. Salvatore and Shelton figure this is because whites rarely experience any racism; they do not even notice the subtle forms of racism, and are thrown off balance when they are hit over the head by overt acts. Many blacks, by contrast, have developed coping strategies for the most hateful kinds of racism; it's the constant, vague, just-below-the-surface acts of racism that impair performance, day in and day out."

This is why I'm more disturbed by expressions of privileged ignorance from people whom I have some trust in, rather than dude-on-the-street spouting a racial slur. This is why I care more about creative works that fail in race or other areas when they come from creators who should know better, based on their previous performance (Joss Whedon, I'm looking at you).

5. This is not race-related, but it's important: March 31st was End the R-word Day, a day dedicated to ending the use of "retard"/"retarded" as a derogatory term.

I have succeeded in removing the word from my vocabulary, but I've utterly failed in speaking out to the people around me. There's no excuse for this. I wouldn't tolerate people using "cunt," "pussy," or "gay" as insults to me, so I can't tolerate "retard" used in the same manner.

I will start by resolving to respond to derogatory uses of "retard"/"retarded" by saying, "Please don't use 'retard'/'retarded' as an insult." That's all. It's just a start.

Yes, you! From the comfort of your computer chair!

1. Donate to Home Alive

Home Alive is a Seattle-based anti-violence organization that has presented community-based responses to violence since 1993. However, severe lack of funding has caused them to cut back on their work, and even lose their office space. They are very much in need of financial support right now.

More details on the situation )

Please consider donating to help keep Home Alive functional. Every little bit helps.

2. Support the first Asian Women Blog Carnival

[info]ciderpress (LiveJournal) is launching this carnival in April. The call for submissions has details and background, but here's the basic information: )

According to these criteria, every single one of you is eligible to contribute to this carnival! You have until April 3 - go for it!

Apropos of nothing (don't think I'm bucking trends here - a navel-gazing New Year's post will be up soon), does anyone local have a use for small, rectangular metal tins?

I've ordered a lot of tea samples from Adagio over the years, and now I have a bunch of empty tins that I don't know what to do with. I have re-used some of them to store loose spices and other teas, but I still have over a dozen that are sitting empty in my cupboard. I was going to chuck them into recycling, but I figured they might be one of those odd, random objects that are very useful under the right circumstances.

Relevant info:

-I have over a dozen of these tins (twice as many if you count the ones I'm still in the process of using up), and will give as many of them to as many people as want them.
-They are rectangular and measure about 4 x 4 x 6 in centimeters and 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 in inches.
-I don't know exactly what kind of metal they're made of, but they are ferrous (which I found out when I tested to see if they're recyclable).
-A few of them stored fruity herbal teas, and the scent of the teas was strong enough that they still permeate the tins a bit. I wouldn't use these for storing other teas or spices, but they're still good for non-food items, like beads, needles, or small figures.

Let me know if you want any, and I'll bring them next time I see you.

Just a reminder, my old position is now open. If you are interested in applying (it's a receptionist/office assistant position) drop me a line and I can give you info and advice. It's a decent job - not without its frustrations and limitations, as you can probably tell by my various complaints over the months - but overall a good place to be for at least a year or so. The position closes on Friday the 25th, so let me know ASAP if you want to apply.

Jun. 29th, 2008 @ 04:34 pm Save same-sex marriage in California!
Current Mood: hot

Opponents of same-sex marriage are seeking to reverse the California Supreme Court ruling in June of this year, which legalized same-sex marriage in that state. These forces want to put a constitutional amendment to vote in November that will take that right away.

Live Long and Marry is an LJ community seeking to raise money for the efforts against this proposed amendment. Artists of all kinds are offering their services for bidding/purchasing, which you pay for by donating to same-sex marriage activist efforts.

For those (like me) who are not in fandom and do not wish to bid, we can just make donations directly to an organization. The community profile includes a list of suggested organizations. I picked Equality For All, which is a coalition of groups supporting gay and lesbian rights, as well as trans people, African Americans, and Asian Americans. You can donate directly through their website via credit card, for any amount. So even if you can't afford much, you can throw in what you can for a good cause.

Looks like my email notifications for comments on my journal have crapped out over the past few days, so sorry if I missed your earlier comments.

Luckily, [info]das_dingsi pointed out this handy tool, so I'll be using it to keep up with comments until the problem (hopefully) goes away.

Because of this snafu, I thought that no one had commented on the fic I posted last night. So I thought, "Woo! I can take the time to revise it now that I'm well-rested and fully awake before anyone reads it!" Except, of course, that was not the case. XD;;

I just found out that the folks who run Cedars Restaurant on the Ave have lost their lease and will be leaving. The restaurant will stay open under new ownership.

The hearsay-but-possibly-still-useful info: My coworkers wanted to make one last trip to Cedars, but when we called we were told that the new ownership is already taking over, using new recipes. The old owners suggested that we instead go to the other restaurant they own, Taste of India.

Also, the biannual Friends of the Seattle Public Library book sale is this weekend! I keep telling myself I should stop going, because I have more books than shelf space, but I might go at least to raid the graphic novel room ...

Two things:

1. My paid LJ account is running out in a week or so.
2. LJ hasn't gotten any less stupid in the past six months.

When LJ first started coming out with its ass-backwards policies, I decided that I would stay until my paid account expired. At that point, I'd see if it was worth it to renew my account.

LJ is still not acting like a company I want to give my money to, so I'll be moving over to InsaneJournal. (I already have an account there, but no content yet.) I'll probably get a paid account and move my journal content over there (assuming I can - I'm still learning about various migration tools).

I'll keep my basic account here for the purposes of reading and commenting on my friendslist, but besides that I don't expect to use it for anything.

FYI, if you'd like to be able to read my locked posts, you can get an InsaneJournal account for free and I'll friend you. That's what I've been using my IJ account for so far.

About this Entry
Nov. 15th, 2007 @ 11:15 am Lakota Sioux women's shelter needs help

All text from the Pretty Bird Woman House blog.

In May of this year, the progressive netroots pulled together to save a tiny women's shelter on a Lakota Sioux reservation in South Dakota. Thanks to over 680 strangers who donated a combined $27,000, Pretty Bird Woman House was able to keep its doors open for the duration and provide emergency shelter for 188 women and 132 children.

But just last month thieves broke into Pretty Bird Woman House - literally smashing holes through the walls. They stole the computers, the television, clothing, toiletries - all donated. Then arsonists set fire to the building.

Pretty Bird Woman House remains open, without a house, in an unheated, donated office. The tribal council has done all it can afford to do. Without a house, this sanctuary will die.

Pretty Bird Woman House needs another netroots miracle to survive. There is so much in the world we are powerless over. For Pretty Bird Woman House you can make a difference, make the world a better place, right here, right now, today.

I've already decided that I won't be renewing my paid account at the end of the year, barring some huge improvements in LJ-land (such as, perhaps, entirely new management). I'll stick around with a free account to follow my friends list, but whether I keep posting here will depend on what LJ fixes (or not) in the next few months.

So! In the meantime, I have accounts on both InsaneJournal and GreatestJournal under the same username. At the moment, I'm not posting in either one, just using them to follow people who have already left LJ. If/when I move out of LJ, I'll say so.

For now, I'm asking that anyone who's already made the move please friend me on those journals so I know where you are. I've already friended some people, but I may have missed your announcement or don't know your username.

Thanks!

I did a little purging of the friends list, because it was getting longer than my attention span, and also because I put semi-personal information into friends-locked entries. I used to friend back everyone who friended me, but then it occurred to me that I was randomly making my personal life accessible to people I don't know. I'm sure you're all nice people, but, you know. And I figured anyone whom I don't know who friends me does so for the political content, not the personal. Otherwise that's just creepy. All the political rants are open to the public, so this shouldn't really affect anyone, I think. And I, uh, don't want to make this some BNF-wannabe thing about how I have too many friends or something. Just wanted to give people a heads up.
